Film Faced Plywood Formwork

Film-coated plywood, also known as film-coated formwork plywood, is known as a specialized plywood in construction. In recent years, it has been favored by many customers because it helps reduce construction time, labor costs, and material costs. Although it was born after other types of formwork such as aluminum formwork, steel formwork, and plastic formwork, film-coated plywood still has a high ranking in the market thanks to its strengths. Let's find out with An Phong in the following article.

What is film faced plywood?

1. Concept of film faced plywood formwork

Film faced plywood is industrial wood panels that are pressed together with a certain amount of glue to create plywood panels used for civil or industrial construction.

To increase the durability and usage time of plywood. People cover a layer of Dynea film, Stora Enso, which is a type of paper film with glue. Helps to prevent water, increase the gloss and smoothness of plywood, minimize scratches and significantly increase durability.

Film faced plywood is usually made from many thin layers of wood (9-12 layers of wood) and pressed together with a special waterproof glue. There is a film coating on the outside to avoid environmental impacts such as external forces, moisture and water, while helping to flatten the surface of the board and create a complete shape for concrete products.

2. Technical specifications of film faced plywood formwork

  • Size: 122×244 cm
  • Thickness: 12mm, 15mm, 18mm
  • Color: coffee brown film coating, black film coating
  • Number of reuses: 7 – 10 times
  • Humidity: below 12%
  • Number of wood layers: 9 – 11 layers
  • Wood edge: waterproof glue paint
  • Glue type for plywood: WBP Melaminel / Phenolic waterproof glue

3. Advantages and disadvantages of film coated plywood formwork

Advantage

  • Hard, light and easy to transport
  • Waterproof, anti-mold, highly durable in harsh weather conditions in Vietnam
  • Smooth, flat surface helps create a beautiful, smooth concrete surface
  • Easy to cut by hand or with CNC cutting machine
  • Reusable many times (7 – 10 times)
  • Low cost

Disadvantages

  • The interior finish is compromised as the film coating is susceptible to scratches if a sharp object such as metal is inserted into the surface.
  • The surface is sometimes not completely flat due to the hot and humid tropical weather in Vietnam. If you make furniture that requires aesthetics, you need a skilled worker to handle it.

4. Applications of film coated plywood formwork

  • The concrete surface is completely flat, no mortar is needed after casting.
  • Light density, portable, easy to install.
  • Save labor costs and shorten project schedules.
  • Waterproof, reusable, highly economical.
  • Plywood consists of many layers of veneer hot pressed 2-3 times with heat-resistant glue (WBP) to increase the elasticity, hardness of the plywood and the ability to work in humid outdoor conditions.
  • Film is a phenolic adhesive film to make the surface smooth, less scratched and protect the use of plywood. The core of plywood is using planted hardwood.

Factors determining the quality of film faced plywood formwork

1. Glue

Is the most important factor determining the quality of film faced plywood.

There are 2 main types:

– WBP (Water Boiled Proof): Keo có đặc tính chống nước

WBP glue board can be used outdoors in humid environments without delamination.

Common types of plywood:

  • WBP – Phenolic
  • WBP – Melamine (common and good types)

– MR (Moisture Resistant): Glue has moisture resistant properties

MR glue board is suitable for use in low humidity environments, often used for indoor applications. MR glue board can withstand boiling for up to 30 minutes, rarely used as plywood in construction.

2. Movie

Phenolic glue laminated paper tray is waterproof and helps create smoothness, reduce scratches and protect the board during use.

3. Plywood core

This is the factor that determines the hardness, durability and load-bearing capacity.

There are many types of wood used to make plywood: mixed forest wood, mixed garden wood (cashew, eucalyptus, ...), birch, .... There are 3 types of plywood quality:

  • Type A: connect up to 4 panels lengthwise. Wood is dried in 20 minutes, heat pressed in 30 minutes, good bearing capacity, less hollow.
  • Type B: connect up to 8 panels lengthwise. Wood drying for 10 minutes, heat pressing for 10 minutes.
  • Type C: unlimited joints. Wood is dried for 10 minutes, heat pressed for 10 minutes, the core has many voids.

The drying and heat pressing process both increases the adhesion of the glue and increases the strength of the board.

6 reasons to use film faced plywood formwork in construction

Nowadays, most construction works use concrete. Therefore, how to pour concrete molds to ensure quality as well as aesthetics is always an issue that contractors consider and calculate carefully. Unlike conventional molds, molds made from film-coated plywood have many outstanding advantages.

1. Low cost

No one can deny that film-coated wood products are now much cheaper than other materials. It meets the wide needs of users in terms of materials, designs and prices.

Basically, the film-coated plywood market is classified based on the construction material such as steel formwork, aluminum formwork, bamboo formwork, plastic formwork, etc. However, film-coated plywood made from plywood is more popular because it has a much "softer" price.

2. Minimize material loss

One of the advantages that makes film-coated wood so popular is its ability to save materials and significantly reduce loss.

Because of the closed surface design, this type of formwork is formed into a fixed mold, ensuring firmness and retaining almost all of the poured concrete without water leakage.

Not only that, the amount of nails needed is also much less than usual. So it avoids waste while still ensuring the desired quality of the project.

3. Ensure aesthetics

When using film-coated plywood to make concrete molds, after removing the mold, it ensures a smooth, flat and beautiful surface. In addition, some types of film-coated plywood also have an additional layer of phenolic glue-laminated paper film on the outside.

Thanks to this, it is extremely waterproof, while creating a surprisingly shiny, smooth, scratch-resistant and adhesive finish.

As soon as the concrete is dry, the worker can proceed to roll the paint directly. Thus, you will not need to spend time to handle the plastering step again.

4. Easy to transport

Because plywood is light in weight and has good anti-adhesive properties, it will not stick to concrete after dismantling. At this time, its weight will remain the same as the original or increase very little. This creates favorable conditions for transportation, ensuring ease and safety.

5. Durable over time

In fact, through many tests, plywood has proven that even if reused 8 to 10 times, its quality remains unchanged. Moreover, this type of film-coated wood is a type of wood that has been fully processed and chemically treated. Therefore, users can rest assured that it will not warp or crack compared to natural wood formwork.

6. Easy to construct

In the case of construction where the column is too large, the use of formwork will often be very complicated. If the civil housing project has a column located close to the wall of the house next door, you should only join 3 sides, the wooden formwork box is difficult to join accurately. The column clamp set of the plywood formwork with the ability to slide up and down along the column, thereby helping to reduce the time of joining the formwork and pouring concrete, ensuring the accurate joining of 3 formwork sides.

Plywood has outstanding characteristics such as light weight, non-sticky, and easy to assemble. Therefore, it creates more favorable conditions during construction. Instead of using other materials, using plywood will be easier to transport, save labor costs, materials, time and also cheap.
